The Lost Airship

Cornu-Chi

Once again Starburner Galactic Courier Service brings a unique experience to Gaslight Gathering.
This year the Couriers are tasked with guarding a one of a kind craft from both future and past. Convention attendees will have the opportunity to pilot the fully interactive "Cornu-Chi" ... a full size Victorian fighter style craft.

As the story goes...In the year 1887, agents of the Starburner Galactic Courier Service were contracted to travel to the future to take possession of an object which would play a important roll in a galaxy far, far away in a time long ago. Their task would take them to a warehouse in the year 2019 where they were to secure, service and maintain the object and then return it to the year 1887. Upon their arrival they made an astonishing discovery. The object was, in fact, a craft they themselves had built as commissioned by a mysterious time traveler from 1973. To complete their task, the Starburners brought a crack team of technicians and mechanics, security officers and two of their most skilled pilots. The craft, known as the Cornu-Chi, was the precursor to the ships that would free the galaxy.
Upon it’s completion, the craft had been released to the one who commissioned it along with all the relevant documentation. It dropped out of sight for many decades, its whereabouts unknown...until now.

To help the Starburners accomplish their mission, a “pilot” will be selected from the convention attendees present on the hour from10 am to 6 pm on Saturday and from 10 am to 4 pm on Sunday. Each “pilot” selected will be assisted in boarding the craft and initiating the start-up sequence, bringing the craft to full operational readiness. Then, after a “thumbs up” from the Controller the pilot will be assisted in powering down before exiting the cockpit.Add Description here

Starburner Galactic Courier Service will be exhibiting the Strato Sculpin

Maker Faire is the Greatest Show (and Tell) on Earth — a family-friendly festival of invention, creativity and resourcefulness, and a celebration of the Maker movement.

Part science fair, part county fair, and part something entirely new, Maker Faire is an all-ages gathering of tech enthusiasts, crafters, educators, tinkerers, hobbyists, engineers, science clubs, authors, artists, students, and commercial exhibitors. All of these “makers” come to Maker Faire to show what they have made and to share what they have learned.

San Diego Natural History Museum

Rediscover a Lost Civilization *Maya* Hidden Worlds Revealed

DESCRIPTION:  Join Agents of Starburner Galactic Courier Service to visit the ruined cities of the ancient Maya that have captured our imaginations since news of their discovery in the jungles of Central America was published in the 1840s. Extensive research has uncovered a culture with a sophisticated worldview that, during its Classic period (250-900 AD), rivaled any civilization in Europe. Maya: Hidden Worlds Revealed, an original exhibition, sheds light on this mysterious and majestic ancient culture.

Following our adventure, please plan to join us for a picnic lunch on the lawn at the back entrance of the Natural History Museum, right near the historic Moreton Bay Fig Tree (corner of Village Place and Park Boulevard). Please bring your own picnic items and your own food/beverages. Please remember that no alcohol and no glass bottles are allowed in the park.  The Moreton Bay Fig Tree is now encircled by a protective low fence, so we will not be able to right under it for shade. If you need shade, please remember to bring a parasol or an awning or some sort of shade to protect you from the sun. If you have any questions, please contact Agent No. 2 at MayanAdventure@starburnercouriers.com

DRAWING THE WORLD AROUND US: Translating what we see in 3-dimensions to the 2-dimensional page

DESCRIPTION:

Working from photos of animals and instructor examples in class session, students will learn to see the rhythms and structures of representative animals and be able to apply their knowledge to the observation of any animate or inanimate objects. Similar to a computer, the more data that goes in, the more creative the computations that come out. This knowledge can help makers get their ideas down more effectively on paper as well as helping to envision how disparate parts might be combined into an effective assemblage. The idea is to be able to see basic underlying structures first to which details can be added later. This same approach would be used in creating accurate likenesses of people. Contrary to popular belief, it’s not the details that sell the believability of a representational work of art, but the underlying soundness of the design.

Aaron teaches a simple, logical method based in part on the academic training experienced by artists, including the Impressionists, in the 19th Century and further includes principles of drawing on the right side of the brain. Topics such as line, tone, value (light/dark) shape, direction, angles, perspective and rhythms in the visual world will be introduced in a unique and memorable way.

The session begins with a short presentation with visual examples and live demonstration by the presenter and concludes in hands-on student work with individual assistance and positive critique of student work. Students need to bring several sheets of computer paper and 3-6 sharpened #2 or softer pencils. Erasers are optional and actually not recommended. The objective will be to learn a new process, not to create a “masterpiece” in the class.

A Demonstration of the Steampunk Sport of Tea Dueling!

Just what is this tea dueling craze and how does one get involved? Come to this fun, free demonstration in the park and learn all about clean noms, proper biscuits, toddies, and the dreaded splooge, as you witness (and maybe even participate in) a classic battle of wits, skill, boastful-chatter and the giving of the evil-eye. You’ll love the drama as the crowd cheers wildly for each brave champion who accepts the challenge put forth by the masters of ceremony. It’s fun, it’s thrilling, it’s tea-time like you've never experienced it before. There will also be membership information available from local tea duel teams. All tea duel equipment and sundries will be provided but to round out the day in a most splendid way, you may like to bring a picnic lunch to dine on in the park. Also, we encourage you to wear your summertime Victorian or steampunk ensemble if you like (but please do not wear or bring any weapons, real or prop).

Because alcohol will be served on the boat, this event is for steampunks age 21 & up only, please.

A stunning stained glass skylight in the main hall and a wide observation deck outside add to her festive mood."
